Global Liquid Ban Regulations

The International Civil Aviation Organisation applies the following rules for liquids in hand baggage and purchases in Duty Free Shops;

  • Passengers are only allowed to carry liquids and gels in containers with a volume of 5 x 100ml or less
  • These containers may only be carried in a transparent resealable plastic bag - one per passenger - the bag is not to exceed 1 litre.
  • Passengers travelling from South African Airports are being barred from carrying any liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) purchased at Duty Free Shops onwards on CONNECTING flights to European Union countries and United States.

Passengers transiting in an EU airport will have LAGs that have been bought at an SA Airport CONFISCATED on secondary screening at the EU airport. This is due to the European Union not recognising the integrity of Security Tamper Evident Bags (STEB) at SA Airports.

Passengers travelling to Australia may take on board liquids, aerosols and gels purchased at Duty Free Stores, providing they are delivered to the gate in a sealed bag with proof of purchase and only collected by the passenger at the boarding gate.

Due to International Aeronautical Security Restrictions, passengers taking a connecting flight may not carry any liquid, aerosol or gels that exceed 5 x 100ml, when going on a connecting flight.

Passengers may only carry small quantities (max. 100ml per container) of liquids, gels, pastes and aerosols in their hand luggage. The packaging of these products must also meet specific requirements. The following rules apply for liquids in hand baggage:

  • Passengers are only allowed to carry liquids and gels in containers with a volume of 5 x 100ml or less.
  • These containers may only be carried in a transparent resealable plastic bag, one per passenger, the bag not exceeding 1 litre.
  • Passenger travelling to Australia may take on board liquids, aerosols and gels purchased at Duty Free Stores, providing they are delivered to the gate in a sealed bag with proof of purchase and only collected by the passenger at the boarding gate. Confirmation of transaction must be completed at collection point (link), not less than 1,5 hours before boarding times.
  • Passengers travelling from South African Airports are being barred from carrying any liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) purchased at Duty Free Shops onwards on connecting flights to European Union countries and United States. Passengers transiting at an EU airport will have LAGs that have been bought at a SA airport confiscated on secondary screening at the EU airport, as the European Union do not recognise the integrity of Security Tamper Evident Bags (STEB) at SA Airports.
